How to actually use a word list

Scanning a list is the slowest way to solve a puzzle, and it is easy to talk yourself into a word that contradicts a clue you already have. Two habits make lists genuinely useful. First, read them after forming your own guess, not instead of it — the list then works as a check rather than a crutch, and you keep building the pattern recognition that makes you faster. Second, filter before you read: knowing the answer ends in -ER or contains no vowel besides O removes most candidates instantly, and what is left is short enough to hold in your head.
