Best Wordle Starting Words (2026)

Your opening guess sets up the whole game. A strong start word tests the most common letters at once, so the colours you get back rule out — or lock in — as many possibilities as possible. Here are the openers that consistently perform best, and how to use them.

What makes a good starting word

These score highest on letter coverage and real answer frequency:

The two-word opener strategy

Instead of only reacting to your first result, plan your first two guesses to cover ten different high-value letters. A popular pairing is SLATE then DOING (or CHIMP): between them you test ten common letters. After two guesses you’ll usually know most of the answer’s letters and can spend guesses three to six placing them.

Playing on hard mode? You can’t ignore confirmed letters, so a fixed two-word opener won’t work — pick one strong opener and adapt from there.
