How to Win at Wordle (Almost) Every Time

Wordle rewards a plan. You get six guesses to find a five-letter word; each guess turns tiles green (right letter, right spot), yellow (right letter, wrong spot) or grey (not in the word). Follow this repeatable process and your win rate — and your streak — will climb.

1. Start strong

Open with a word rich in common letters such as SLATE or CRANE. See our full list of best starting words for why these work.

2. Eliminate aggressively on guess two

If your opener came back mostly grey, that’s good news — you’ve cleared common letters. Use your second guess to test five new high-frequency letters rather than reusing what you already know.

3. Use every colour

• Green letters stay locked in place.
• Yellow letters are in the word — try them in a different position.
• Grey letters are out; don’t play them again.

4. Watch for traps

• Double letters. Words like SPEED or MUMMY repeat a letter — easy to miss when guesses are short.
• Common endings. Many answers end in -ER, -LY, -ND, -GHT or -OUND. If you have the last letters, brainstorm from the ending.
• Vowel placement. Once you know which vowels are in, working out where they sit often cracks the word.

5. End-game (guesses 4–6)
