How to Play Wordle
Everything you need to guess the word in six tries — plus tips to do it in fewer.
The basic rules
Wordle gives you six guesses to find a hidden five-letter word. Each guess must be a real word. When you press Enter, every tile changes colour to give you a clue:
W
O
R
D
S
Green means the letter is correct and in the right position.
P
L
A
N
T
Yellow means the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
V
A
G
U
E
Grey means the letter isn't in the word at all.
Hard mode
Turn on hard mode in settings to make any revealed clue mandatory: every green letter must stay in place and every yellow letter must appear in your next guess. It's tougher, but far more satisfying.
Tips to win faster
- Start strong. Open with a word full of common letters like CRANE, SLATE or AUDIO.
- Spend guess two on new letters. Don't reuse greys — cover fresh vowels and consonants.
- Mind repeats. Letters can appear twice (like the two E's in GEESE).
- Use the clues. Yellow letters must move; grey letters are gone for good.
- Still stuck? The Wordle Solver lists every word that still fits.
